Make a Sussex Trug Weekend

This course is a practical introduction to the craft of Trug making skills and techniques. You will learn from experienced local craftsmen all about the history of the Trug and be guided through the process to make your own Trug to take home.

    Programme

    Two days 9.30am - 4.30pm

    1. Introduction to the History of Trug Making: The course commences with a talk on the history of the Trug and an insight into what you will be doing over the weekend. A Master Trug Maker will be present during the weekend to discuss Trugs and Trug Making with you, he will explain the process of trug making, its rich history and the current state of the industry.
    2. Have a go: Your two main instructors will be Master Trug Maker Chris Tuppen and Craftsman Caleb Pimm. Both of whom have lots of experience in running Trug Making Courses and will guide you through the Trug making process.

    The course is unhurried, and you will obtain all the support you need from the instructors.

    What to Expect

    A fun, practical weekend learning about the history of the Sussex trug and traditional trug making skills.
    You will take home a trug that you have made over the weekend.
    All materials and tools required to make your trug will be provided.
    Trug making requires some strength and dexterity in the hands and course participants should be aware that sharp tools will be used and some activities will require reasonable physical input.

    What to Bring

    Please bring a packed lunch. Refreshments will be provided, including a homemade cake.
    Parking is available at the entrance to our farm and our training room is just a short walk down our track.
    Bring yourself, confirmation of your booking, a notebook and any questions you may have..
    Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the course for a prompt start

    Cancellation Policy:

    To ensure all attendees get the best experience from their training we only run our courses in small groups.

    We therefore must operate with a strict cancellation policy:  Refunds (or booking transfers) are not given for cancellations made within 2 weeks of the course.  If a cancellation is made with more than 2 weeks notice but within 6 weeks of the course date, then we will try to re-sell your tickets, if we are successful then a refund will be issued for the full amount less a £10 administration fee.  If a cancellation is made with more than 6 weeks notice, then a full refund will be issued.

    Tutors

    Our Trug Makers are from Thomas Smith’s Trug Shop which has been in existence for 190 years.  Robin Tuppen started making Trugs back in 1983 and is now a Grand Master Trug Maker and a member of the Basket makers’ Association and a Yeoman Member of the Worshipful Company of Basket makers.

    Chris has been making Trugs for about 20 years and has successfully guided three apprentices through their training in order to become a Master Craftsman.  Caleb is currently tutoring two apprentices; one is almost ready to start his third and final year and the second is a first-year apprentice.
